DEAR ARTIST: BE KIND TO YOURSELF

Dear Artist: Be Kind to Yourself

by Joey Phoenix

When I see my friends posting about how they are getting all of these brilliant opportunities, like how one of my friends is taking a cross country road trip to meet with publishers and publish his book of art, or another friend has been accepted to yet another gallery show (except that this time it’s solo), or someone else I know recently got hired by a certain arts and nerd core culture magazine based out of Los Angeles, I sometimes get a little discouraged.

RODIN LANDS AT PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM – PHOTO GALLERY

The Peabody Essex Museum has brought in no shortage of exceptional exhibits over the past few months. From the extraordinary kinetic sculptures in Strandbeest: The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen, to the nostalgia-inducing American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood, to the evocative Native American fashion exhibit Native Fashion Now, the PEM continues to impress.

This month, the Peabody Essex Museum is introducing Rodin: Transforming Sculpture showcasing one of the world’s most iconic and avant-garde sculptors, French artist Auguste Rodin. In addition to the display of Rodin’s pieces themselves, the exhibition will also feature ongoing performances from the Peabody, MA-based Bosoma Dance Company.

This spectacular celebration of African drum and dance is called “FOLI:  Rhythm of African Life”. Part light show, part dance celebration, and part music extravaganza, this one-night-only, immersive experience creates a visceral depiction of African life through drum, dance and photography.

Directed and conceived by Gregory Coles, this event is presented by CinemaSalem and Creative Salem.
