Igor Stravinsky was one of the most influential and accomplished composers of the 20th century. His groundbreaking orchestral work, The Rite of Spring, set the stage for an artistic life of continual reinvention and innovation. His neoclassical phase was just as radical in its own way, spearheaded by his rewriting of baroque music in Pulcinella .

The concert program includes the Salem premiere of the four-hand piano version of The Rite of Spring performed by Paul Jacobs and Yilin You, Suite italienne for violin and piano from Pulcinella , and Three Pieces for String Quartet with violinists Angel Valchinov and Li-Mei Liang, violist Chen Lin, and cellist Nick Dinnerstein.

Composer Focus is a classical concert series, specializing in 20th and 21st century chamber music for piano and strings. The series intends to introduce local audiences to some of the most original and accomplished composers of our time through vibrant performances in Cambridge and in towns throughout New England. Each concert explores the music of a single classical composer and consists of major as well as rarely performed works in a variety of instrumental combinations. The styles represented are broad, from the modernist complexities of Gyorgy Ligeti to the meditative simplicity of Philip Glass. This season, titled “Stravinsky’s Reach,” will consist of five concerts with music by Stravinsky, Martinu, Mozart, Webern, and Moondog. Stravinsky is the guiding force behind Composer Focus 2015-16 season, having heavily influenced Martinu, taken Mozart and Webern as influences, and strangely crossed paths with the contemporary composer, Moondog.
