Oktoberfest Salem 2017

Oktoberfest in Salem.. Halt deine Lederhosen fest!

COMPILED BY DAN DONATO/OCTOCOG

Chris Lohring, Owner/Brewer, Notch Brewing, Salem, MA: What I’ll be doing this year is celebrating at Notch’s inaugural Oktoberfest. One of the goals with Notch is to bring European beer culture to our tap room & biergarten, and our Oktoberfest will certainly do that. We’ll have a “Festbier” that typical of what is served in the Munich tents, and different than the Oktoberfest lagers exported to the US. Also, we’ll be serving Steckerlfisch, a whole trout cooked over live fire, something rarely seen in the northeast. But there will be the familiar – Karl’s Sausage Kitchen will serve up sausage, pretzels, sauerkraut, and landjager!
Andrew Buonfiglio, Owner/Creative Director, OctoCog Marketing & Design, Salem, MA: Let’s talk pretzels. My favorite part of any Oktoberfest celebration, other than the drinking and yelling, of course, are the pretzels. They reign supreme as the best snack. Pretzels may be the best vessel for transporting more mustard into my mouth. I am looking forward to all the Oktoberfest events going on here in Salem this year, and hopefully pairing a Karl’s Sausage Kitchen’s pretzel with a large glass of mustard, sorry, I mean traditional German Lager.
Brooke Welty, Operations, Karl’s Sausage Kitchen & European Market, Peabody, MA: I work at Karl’s Sausage Kitchen, so we kind of celebrate beer and German culture all year long, but we’re really focusing on highlighting our traditional food and beer offerings for the season. This year I’m treating myself to a new apron for my dirndl to wear around at work and at our Oktoberfest event with Notch because why not?

My favorite Oktoberfest food is a sausage (obviously) with spätzle, covered in sauerbraten gravy and paired with a stein of Ayinger Oktober Fest-Märzen, which is my favorite of the Oktoberfest beers.

Erik Pudas, Cider Maker at Far From the Tree Craft Hard Cider, Salem, MA : My mother’s side of the family is German and this year she gifted my wife her traditional dirndl after we had admired them during a trip to the country this summer. I decided to get a pair of lederhosen so we could celebrate Oktoberfest together in style. We will attend both the Notch and Far From the Tree celebrations this year. For Notch’s more traditional fest, I am particularly excited about their festbier and the Steckerlfisch they will offer. I tried Steckerlfisch for the first time this summer in Munich and it is an amazing pairing with German lagers. FFTT will be serving up a german style apfelwein, which, while in no way traditional to the oktoberfest celebration, will be the perfect opportunity for us to introduce this German style of cider to our customers.
Ben Garry / Matt Sullivan, Owners/Brewers, Old Planters Brewing Company, Beverly, MA: Oktoberfest is a cool time because so many different people in the community have fun events. Some of them are more traditional and some of them less so, but they all involve good people and good beer so you can’t really go wrong.
