Ebeneezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim and the ghost of Jacob Marley are soon to come alive in Salem, as the Hudson Valley’s Master Storyteller, Jonathan Kruk, performs his one-man show of A Christmas Carol on Essex Street in the heart of Salem’s historic McIntire District.

Hailed as an “elegant Robin Williams” with a “Patrick Stewart-like presence”, Kruk’s mesmerizing solo performance magically imbues Dickens’ tale as he, in period garb, dramatically portrays over thirty characters in just over an hour, in the nick of time to resurrect the apparitions of Christmases past, present, and future.

Rousing the house before the show, musician Jim Keyes warms up the public with a “Twelve Days of Christmas” singalong, before accompanying Kruk on harp, organ, bells, violin and the eerie clanking of Marley’s ghostly shackles, setting the spectral scene without the use of sets or effects.

Playing the supernal drama of redemption since its 2011 debut at the Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow, New York, Kruk has storied the narrative to sold-out audiences from the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway, NJ, to Saint Vincent College, to Tarrytown and New York City, with the December arrival of Kruk’s Carol to Salem beckoning its inaugural Massachusetts performance. Hosted by Grace Episcopal Church in their stunningly beautiful Gothic Revival
sanctuary located on Salem’s Essex Street, the Dickensian story, first published in 1843, is figured like never before amidst the lit lanterns, brick sidewalks and historic Federalist structures of Salem’s charmed McIntire District – an imaginary delight for adults and children alike to prefigure a Yuletide merrymaking and transformation as good as Scrooge’s own.
