(Expletive) Shakespeare, the international sensation that completely sold out its first Salem appearance, is returning to CinemaSalem on Thursday, May 5 at 8:30 pm for an encore presentation. Presented by CinemaSalem and Creative Salem, the show features an Elizabethan version of the Bard’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” complete with the sort of audience participation last seen at the Globe Theater in the early 1600s.

The theatrical innovation that makes each show fresh and unique is the inclusion of one inebriated cast member, a different actor each performance, whose attempts to stay in character or whose improvisations make for much of the evening’s humor.

The concept was created in sketchier pubs around London over the course of two years. When it officially opened at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, audiences embraced it, starting the string of sold-out shows that quickly extended to New York, Boston, Austin, and now, Salem.

CinemaSalem co-owner, Paul Van Ness, was impressed with (Expletive) Shakespeare’s troupe of actors. “They not only pull off a great version of a Shakespeare classic, they all have to improvise very skillfully throughout the performance.”

Van Ness was surprised a little bit by the demographics of the April audience. “It was every adult age, but skewed younger than I expected. And the crowd was totally into the show.”

The earlier (Expletive) Shakespeare show sold out a day before the performance, and the theater turned away quite a few disappointed customers who expected to purchase tickets at the door. Tickets for the May 5 performance are available at the CinemaSalem ticket counter or online at www.CinemaSalem.com.
