SALEM, MA – Salem State dance faculty Meghan McLyman, Betsy Miller and James Morrow present and perform an evening of original choreography on Saturday, September 16 in the Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts. They are joined by guest artists, the Caitlin Corbett Dance Company and Peter DiMuro/Public Displays of Motion. This concert is a “Salem Night at the Sophia”, with free admission for residents of Salem.

McLyman’s work comes out of her interest in somatics-based dance education and her explorations of the human experience as both a feminist and a mother. McLyman, whose choreography has been presented in Boston, Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh, is currently chair of Salem State’s Music and Dance department. Miller’s choreography has been described as “haunting, spunky and full of imagination” by New York State Council on the Arts. She was a 2017 Bates College dance Festival Emerging Artist and her work has been presented by numerous companies around the country. James Morrow’s work is a unique melding of classical composition and hip-hop. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Boston Center for the Arts Choreographic Residency in 2016 and The Boston Dance Alliance Rehearsal and Retreat Fellow (2017).

The Caitlin Corbett Dance company was founded by retired Salem State dance faculty, Caitlin Corbett. Her choreography addresses intellectual questions, while it celebrates human quirkiness and challenges our notions of beauty. The company will present “Rain” a lush octet and excerpts from “Undone”, a collection of abstract vignettes. Corbett notes, “These vignettes may begin in the middle or they may end at the beginning of an idea. The thoughts are not finished, or are interrupted.”

The evenings’ other guest artist, Peter DiMuro, received a 2017 Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from Salem State this past May. His company, Public Displays of Motion (PDI) develops and performs artistic works and cultivates dance/arts literacy advocacy and engagement. PDI will present excerpts from “Pioneers”, DiMuro’s new choreography for Aaron Copland’s “Rodeo” which was recently premiered at the Hatch Shell in Boston in conjunction with Boston Landmarks Orchestra. DiMuro is the Executive Director of The Dance Complex in Cambridge.

This performance is sponsored by Salem State University’s Music and Dance Department and Center for Creative and Performing Arts (
